One thing I never thought I’d do is look back and think, “Wow, I’ve been creating content for over 8 years!” Still, it’s only been recently that I can confidently say that I feel more comfortable, and authentic, in my content creation. Rather than letting my online voice build naturally, I started listening to what other people told me to do.
“This is what will make you more successful… this content topic is more profitable.”
There have been many times when I stopped posting consistently because something just felt off.
One of the biggest misconceptions about video marketing is that successful creators simply have more confidence. In reality, many business owners aren’t lacking confidence at all. They’re lacking a process that feels genuine.
I’m beginning to learn that most business owners, or to put it better, founders, are creative. And creative people hate feeling the pressure to constantly create content for the sake of it, to keep up with trends, and appear “on” every day on video. That feels exhausting rather than exciting.
The good news? Creating videos doesn’t have to feel forced.
Here’s why so many business owners struggle with content creation and how you can make it feel more authentic.
Why Business Owners Find It So Hard to Create Videos
1. Feeling pressure to always have something new to say
Many business owners believe they have to reinvent themselves every time they create a video. That pressure alone can stop them before they even begin. Yet, the truth is that their audience hasn’t heard their message nearly as often as they think they have.
2. Trying to sound like everyone else
It’s natural to look at successful creators for inspiration but the problem comes when inspiration turns into imitation. When someone else’s tone or style are constantly being copied, the content begins to feel disconnected from who they really are. Personal experiences, perspective and personality are things no competitor can copy.
3. Overthinking every detail
This is very common.
Instead of pressing record, many entrepreneurs spend hours planning the perfect video that never gets filmed. They may spend a lot of time pondering the exact words to say, even the oufit to wear. But, that doesn’t help with progress. Besides, it is in the creation and publishing that refinement comes.
4. Forgeting why they started their business
Hardly anything drives businesses forward more than constantly knowing the why. That matters in content creation too. Most businesses begin because someone wanted to solve a problem. When content becomes another task on the to-do list, it’s easy to lose sight of that original purpose. Videos are simply another way of helping people.
How to Make Creating Videos Feel More Natural
Draw from your own experiences
Some of your best content already exists.
Think about:
- Questions customers ask repeatedly.
- Challenges you’ve overcome.
- Mistakes you’ve learned from.
- Lessons you’ve discovered while running your business.
- Conversations you’ve had with clients.
These moments are far more valuable, and memorable, than trying to copy the latest trend.
Remember your “why”
Before creating content, or even coming up with a content plan, come back to your purpose. Rememeber the person you are trying to help. Focus on the problem you are solving. With every video, think about how someone’s life will improve. Even if it is with a laugh.
This also helps when content creation starts feeling uncomfortable. Those moments will come. But when you shift your focus to why you started in the first palce, creating content becomes much less intimidating.
Start simple
You do not need expensive equipment or a professional studio, and you certainly do not need the perfect script. Instead, start with one idea and speak to one person. Because simple videos often outperform heavily produced ones, keeping things straightforward tends to feel far more genuine.
N.B. Most platforms are giving preference to high quality videos, as the idea is to compete with streaming platforms such as Netflix. Therefore, do have a plan to increase the quality of your videos over time, but do not let that stop you.
Give yourself the permission to be imperfect
Some of the highest performing videos online include small mistakes and natural pauses, and it is precisely those moments that make you human. People are not looking for flawless presenters; they are looking for someone they can trust.
If being on camera feels overwhelming, start with faceless content
Video marketing does not always require your face. You could film your workspace, show products being made or packaged, or record your screen while demonstrating a process. As your confidence grows, you may decide to appear on camera more often, but there is no rule that says you have to start there.

Create before you consume
One habit that quietly sabotages creativity is consuming more than you create. And, especially if you spend time consuming before spending time on your own ideas. By the time you have watched dozens of creators, it becomes difficult to hear your own voice. Try creating your content first, then turn to social media afterwards for inspiration or engagement, since your ideas will likely feel far more original as a result.
Authentic Content Always Wins
I know it may sound like a paradox that I started this article with my regret of listening to other “experts,” and now I’m giving you advice. However, I hope you get inspiration from this, coupled with practical tips that help you express your creativity, instead of stifling it. Your audience does not expect you to be perfect, nor do they expect television quality production. They simply want someone who understands their problem and offers a solution.
If creating videos has always felt difficult, it does not mean you are bad at content creation. It may simply mean you have been trying to create content in a way that does not fit who you are. Find a process that feels authentic and draw from your own experiences, and you would be surprised how many videos you start producing as a result.
